Why Roots in the Clay?

Rooted in : formed, made, or developed by using (something) as a basis.

I was so excited.

Today was the day I was going to finally plant my first garden.  Together, my Dad and I gathered our shovels and headed to the carefully selected area in the backyard.  Dad drove his shovel into the ground and pulled up the grass, revealing the rich, dark, moist, nutrient filled… CLAY.  The dirt in our garden plot was full of clay, which is hard, water resistant, and nutrient lacking.  Needless to say, I didn’t give up. There were many years of trial and error with little results, but my perseverance (and LOTS of soil supplements!) is now being rewarded with beautiful, bountiful gardens.

It isn’t easy.

Starting anything even remotely related to homesteading isn’t easy. Trying to put down roots when you feel as though you just can’t get a grip in the hard clay soil can be downright hard.  But it is possible.  Pretty soon, through trial and error and study, you begin to realize how you can supplement your soil so those beginning roots can grow and flourish.

This website isn’t anything special.  It’s just a starting point.  An informative place to develop questions and get a basic understanding of some homesteading practices.  Let’s get started.
