Chickens

Chickens are one of the most commonly raised “outdoor pets” around! Incredibly easy to raise and only requiring a small start up cost, Chickens are the perfect beginner’s animal!

Characteristics:

Just like goats, chickens can provide hours of entertainment as they strut around their yard, clucking and scratching in the dirt.  Each chicken has their own distinct personality and they all take “the pecking order” quite seriously.  The hierarchy amongst these feathery ladies provides structure and stability to the coop.  Chickens do not make much noise, however, when provoked, they will squawk quite loudly!  Some chickens are quite comfortable behind held, while others prefer to be left on the ground.  However, they will ALL immediately flock around whenever you deliver a bucket of kitchen scraps.  Most chickens are content to spend their days foraging through the yard, sun/dust-bathing, and peacefully laying their eggs in the privacy of the coop.

Breeds:

When it comes to Chicken Breeds, they can be split into two categories: Egg Layers and Meat Birds. When choosing egg layers, it is important to consider what color eggshells you would like to have.  Certain breeds lay certain colors, and having a rainbow of eggs within your fridge is a beautiful sight. 🙂 There are many, MANY chicken breeds.  The following breeds listed are the ones I am most familiar with.

• Egg Layers: Plymouth Rock, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, and Wyandotte.

• Meat Birds: Cornish Cross, Orpington, Freedom Rangers, and Jersey Giant.
